Creating personas to assist in crafting your marketing messages can be extremely helpful in coming up with the perfect copy.

What is a persona? A persona, for marketing purposes, is a collection of personality traits, demographics and psycho-graphic information that is assembled to create the picture of the buyer or client that you wish to attract to your business.

Here are a couple extremely simple, yet very effective, ways to get started using this methodology today for crafting your marketing messages.

1. Make a Sad/Happy List
Yep. This is as simple as it sounds. Make a two-column list that has a general sad state of your ideal customer and a general happy state. This can also be a list of the before and after states of not having your product or service.

Example:
Before, Sad - Massive back pains, can't do much around the house or with family
After, Happy - Greatly reduced or no back pains that allows for greater mobility to enjoy more family time and feeling useful around the house.

2. Write in Their Diary
Once you get a list of some of these Sad/Happy items, move on to constructing a day in their diary to get a better understanding of what they may go through.

This process may sound silly, but as you go through this writing, you will begin to uncover how many aspects of a person's life something can affect them without even speaking to them.

Example:
John wakes up in the morning after a terrible night's sleep because his back pain makes it uncomfortable regardless of his position. He then wakes up already tired, groggy and irritable, making him less pleasant to his wife and kids.

Before his morning coffee John already has the need to take more pain meds to even get moving which makes him realize just how dependent he is to these medications....
